Storms are terrifying things. The shear mass and brute force of a forming storm should probably strike fear in any person seeing the clouds gather. So if you have any brains in your heads, you probably drive as fast and as far away as you can. Well, not if you are Nicolaus Wegner. In this case you drive as close as you can, place your tripod on the fields and start a timelapse.
Nicolaus travels with his wife, Daow to chase storms all across middle-northern US (mostly Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Colorado). The team bases their shoots according to weather reports, and travels to catch the forming storms. The results featured on Stormscapes 2 are some of the most awe-inspiring footage I’ve seen.
Interestingly it is not the strong winds that scare Nicolaus the most, it’s the lightning, and Nicolaus had to stop a few shoots because they could not risk getting hit.
