You guys were pretty good at recognizing digital cameras based only on their backs. And today, we have something for film camera enthusiasts. In this DIYP quiz, we ask you to guess film cameras based only on their back. Some of them are iconic, some are less well-known; some are vintage, and there are even some modern ones. So, let’s jump right in and check how well you know your film cameras.
What should you really be spending money on as a photographer?
What do you spend most of your money on when it comes to photography gear? It probably depends on quite a few things: how long you’ve been a photographer, whether you’re a pro or a hobbyist, and what sort of photography you do.
But one thing is for sure: we photographers love to waste money on all the wrong things. In this video, Scott from Tin House Studio weighs in on what he thinks we should be spending our hard-earned cash on.
Decision paralysis is making you miss great photos
Decision paralysis is something that almost every photographer – if they amass enough gear – faces at some point. It’s when you’ve got so much stuff that you just can’t reach a decision on which piece of kit to use. You’ve got too much choice and you’re overwhelmed to the point of not being able to pick anything. We’ve all been there at least once. The solution, of course, is to limit your options.
Limiting your options is a great way to lose decision paralysis. After all, if you’ve got few or no options, the choice is usually quite easy. Logical. Only taking one or two lenses out with you, instead of the usual ten, for example, is a good start. In this video, photographer Mike Smith talks about decision paralysis and how he’s overcome it using what he believes are the only two lenses you need for landscape photography.
Here’s why you probably shouldn’t update your camera gear (yet)
It always seems like everybody scrambles to get all new gear every year or two when the manufacturers announce the newest bodies in their latest release cycle. The same goes for lenses, too. We’re always striving for faster, quieter, sharper, with ever-wider apertures. But Gear Acquisition Syndrom (GAS) isn’t a great thing for you or your photography.
In this video, photographer Roman Fox takes a look at gear and when and why you shouldn’t upgrade your kit. In the interests of fairness, he does talk about why and when you should upgrade a piece of gear, too. Buying new stuff isn’t always just GAS, after all. Sometimes new gear can satisfy a genuine need. But, as Roman suggests, do make sure you need it before putting your money down.
DIYP Quiz: Can you guess the camera based on its back?
Recognizing cameras based only on their photos isn’t exactly my forte. I can tell the brand perhaps, but guessing the model – no, sir! Still, I know many of you are way more into gear than I am. So, here at DIYP, we came up with a fun quiz for you all to test your knowledge. Can you guess the camera model… from the back? Answer these 15 questions and let’s see if you know the back of your gear as the back of your hand!
Leica store in San Francisco robbed with $178,000 worth of gear stolen
An armed robbery recently occurred in San Francisco, the city that keeps earning a bad rep for camera thefts. Four masked thieves burst into a Leica store near Union Square. While holding the employees at gunpoint, they stole $178,000 worth of gear and fled the scene only a few minutes later.

Leica is increasing prices by up to $400… Again.
The prices of pretty much everything have skyrocketed over the past few months, at least here in Europe. So, it’s no surprise that electronics are about to get a price increase as well. This time, it’s Leica – and it’s the company’s third price increase over the last year.
According to some reports, the famous camera company is about to increase prices by up to $400. While this price increase applies to Europe, it’s expected that Leica will adjust the prices in other parts of the world, too.
Can you tell teleconverter from cropping? This test says no, you probably can’t
Teleconverters have been a part of photography for decades. They’re a great way to effectively double the number of lenses you own by effectively turning each lens you own into two lenses. The native lens and one at double that focal length (or focal length range, in the case of zooms). But are they really worth it? And can you tell the difference between images shot with a teleconverter vs simply cropping the image?
In this video, Kevin Raposo analysed over 3,000 photos using a blur detection algorithm to see if there’s really any technical or visual difference in sharpness between cropping or using a teleconverter. And according to his tests, no, there really isn’t. Well, at least, not under all circumstances. In fact, the teleconverter shots actually proved to be a little sharper in some conditions.
Mirrorless cameras dominate as winners of the 2022 TIPA awards
The Technical Image Press Association (TIPA) has announced the winners of the 2022 TIPA World Awards. Just like every year, there are plenty of cameras and lenses awarded, covering a wide range of categories. But there are also imaging software, video, lighting, monitors, camera phones, and inkjet papers and printers. In a word, everything that makes up the photo industry and that you need in life as a professional or amateur photographer.
As I mentioned in the title, mirrorless cameras have shown absolute dominance in their category this year. So, let’s see what are the best cameras according to TIPA, and of course, we’ll go through other gear as well.
