Sunsets will forever be my favorite part of the day. Some argue that they’re all the same, but I say it’s exactly the opposite. Creative photographer Dario Giannobile observed the sky in the sunset, recording its changes day after day. And he came up with an idea. Combining time sequencing and 360-degree photography, he has created unique “stellar flowers” that will leave you speechless.
How I shot abstract light orbs with a 360 camera and camera rotation
It’s been over a decade since I fell in love with the camera rotation technique. And ever since then, I’ve constantly been experimenting and honing my craft. Today, I’m presenting you with abstract orbs I took just before sunrise, using a 360-degree camera paired with camera rotation. I’ll share with you how I took them, hoping to inspire you to try this technique yourself.
This 360° amphibious camera takes its optical design from the eyes of fiddler crabs
One of the big problems you encounter when moving a camera from dry land to under the water is the difference in the index of refraction (IOR). That’s the thing that often makes rivers and lakes appear much shallower than they actually are when you’re looking at them from the water’s edge. For 360° cameras, this difference in IOR can be a big problem when it comes to shifting from the air to underwater.
A team of researchers at the Institute for Basic Science (IBS), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), the Seoul National University and The University of Texas at Austin, though, have developed a system based on one of nature’s designs. They’ve taken inspiration from the fiddler crab to develop a 360° camera system that works both in and out of the water.
This awesome 360 video lets you join the astronauts aboard the ISS
I don’t think I know a person who didn’t dream of flying to space when they were a kid. Well, now you can join the ISS astronauts up there in the orbit… sort of. European Space Agency (ESA) has just published a short and sweet 360-degree video that lets you float through the Space Station with astronaut Thomas Pesquet.
Take a look around Mars in the first 360 degree image from Perseverance
Have you had enough of the Perseverance stuff? Yeah, me neither. NASA has just published an interactive image that lets you see what the rover is seeing. This detailed 360-degree photo lets you look around Mars’ Jezero crater and it’s based on images taken by different rover’s cameras.
Nope, this device from Vecnos doesn’t wipe your memories – It captures them in 360°
A new consumer-grade 360° camera is coming to the market soon from Vecnos, a new startup spun out of Ricoh. While it looks like it will wipe your memories (Men in Black, anyone?), it actually saves them in the form of 360° images. According to Vecnos, this little pen-shaped camera will make it easier to capture your 3D memories and to share them on social media.
This rainproof 24K resolution 360° timelapse camera rig can be built for less than $10,000
Do you remember that awesome timelapse from a couple of years ago of 30 days at sea compressed down into 10 minutes by Jeff Tsang? Well, he’s going to give it another go. Only this time, he’s building a massive 24K resolution 360° waterproof camera rig in order to shoot it.
In this video, he breaks down all the gear he’s using to build the giant 360° camera rig, along with how and why it’s all been chosen. It’s a pretty mammoth project, especially considering he says it probably won’t earn back the purchase price, but boy is it impressive!
Panono makes decision to hold its camera customers hostage behind a paywall
We all know the risks when we back a crowdfunding campaign. Although the risk is typically that the project will fail, the company goes bust, never delivers on the products and all the backers are out of pocket. What backers don’t expect is that a successful campaign backed based on set terms suddenly decides to start charging extra for part of that service way down the line.
Panono launched on Indiegogo (and possibly Kickstarter) way back in 2013. It’s a “Panoramic Ball Camera” offering 360° views with a whopping 108-megapixels. Even today, that’s mighty impressive. You need to utilise their cloud service for processing the images, which was included in the purchase price of the camera. Now, they’ve decided to start charging for it.
Philip Bloom compares the GoPro Hero7, DJI Osmo Action and four more action cameras
There are quite a few action cameras available right now. With the recently launched DJI Osmo Action, the market has become even more interesting. We’ve seen how it performs against its biggest competitor, GoPro Hero7 Black. But what if we compare it to other action cameras? In this video from Philip Bloom, you’ll see a side-by-side comparison of some of the most attractive action cameras currently available, including the latest one from DJI.
The Android-powered Pilot Era 8K 24fps 360° camera with in-camera stitching is now available
We first mentioned the Pilot Era last month after we spotted it at NAB 2019 in Las Vegas. It’s a 360° camera with some serious muscle. It shoots 8K footage through four f/2.2 aspherical fisheye lenses onto four 12-megapixel Sony CMOS sensors. It’s Android-powered, has in-camera stitching all the way up to 8K and half a terabyte of built-in storage.
Now, their Indiegogo campaign has gone live, with prices starting at $1,999 (the $1,799 super early birds are already all gone). Unlike many IGG campaigns, though, the first production run has already happened and they will be shipping next month.
