Jens Heidler of Another Perspective is known for his unique and captivating timelapse videos of various objects. Oftentimes, they show us stuff from our home in a totally new light. But with his latest video, 1000 Days Mushroom Growth, Jens went a step further.
For three long years, he meticulously filmed, photographed, and edited photos of mushrooms he grew in his own basement. It shows the intricate beauty and growth of thirteen distinct types of fungi, and Jens also shares the challenges he faced while creating the video.

To film this video, Jens used a lot of different gear. He shot the photos with Sony A7R IV and, as his second camera, a Sony a6000. As for the lenses, he used a wide variety of them, along with the Raynox DCR 250 macro snap-on lens: the 90mm 1:1 macro lens and the 200-600mm zoom lens from Sony, the Sigma 24mm F/1.4, the Laowa ultra-macro 60 mm F/2.8 lens, and its 24mm f/14 2X macro probe. Of course, there were a few lights, a tripod, and a filter.
Over the three years Jens spent shooting the fungi, his gear had to endure the harsh conditions, dealing with spores and a suffocating humidity of 100%. Miraculously, there’s no trace of damage on his cameras and lenses, at least not visible damage. Whew!
Of course, it’s not only about taking the photos. Jens had to sift through the colossal amounts of image data, carefully selecting and putting together each frame to form his final piece. It reminded me of the documentary Fantastic Fungi, I found it equally captivating.
Jens’s timelapse not only sheds light on the enchanting world of fungi but also serves as an inspiration to fellow photographers and timelapse enthusiasts. Make sure to watch the video above, and follow Jens on Instagram, TikTok and his YouTube channel.
