Should AI-generated pictures win “Creative” categories of photo contests?
Sony World Photography Awards recently published the winners and shortlists of its Open competition. The photos are absolutely stunning, but there’s just one problem – the Creative category winner isn’t a photo at all. The winning image resembles a portrait photo from the 1940s, with a characteristic vintage, nostalgic feel. But on a closer look, you can spot the weird hands – one of the biggest weaknesses of text-to-image generators.
This case sparked some serious debate in the photo community. It also made me think about AI and its place in photography. Should AI-generated art enter and win photography contests? Is it fair? Are there legal issues? I wanted to discuss all of this and more in this article.
A comprehensive guide to photo contests and grants
Winning an award in international photo contests is the dream of many photographers and often the pinnacle of their careers. Beyond that, there is no doubt that winning a respected award can be a massive boon to a photographer’s career. Anna Kariel, a Charlottesville-based photographer who won the APA award, says,
It hugely helped my career. I was relatively new to the Bay Area, and this was a wonderful opportunity to connect with creatives, photographers, and production professionals. I also experienced a significant boost to my SEO ranking and continue to highlight it in the “About Me” section of my website. It was also very exciting to go through the experience of printing my work and presenting it in a gallery alongside so many talented and established artists.

AI image wins top prize in photography contest…again
The first prize-winning image in a photography competition in Australia was won by an AI-generated picture. The judges of the competition were completely fooled, believing the image to be a real photograph taken by a drone of surfers on a beach at sunset.
However, after winning DigiDirect’s monthly competition, the winners revealed that it was nothing more than a publicity stunt for their AI imaging company, Absolutely AI. They later returned the $100 prize money.
