Meta sells Giphy to Shutterstock for $53 million after the UK order
Back in 2021, the UK government ordered Meta to sell Giphy, and now the buyer has been announced. It’s Shutterstock, the famous stock photo company, which agreed to buy Giphy from Meta for $53 million.
This is how photographers should use Instagram in 2023
Instagram used to be a great place for still photographers to hang out. That was in the halcyon days before Meta took over the popular social media app, and keeping up with the algorithm became a never-ending game. It’s been tempting to stop posting altogether, especially as Insta seems to be more interested in keeping influencers happy than their regular users.
But does it have to be this way? Is there still a way to use Instagram that can help your photography business? Scott from Tin House Studio seems to think so. Except that most of us are doing it wrong. In this video, Scott shares his personal views and ideas on how to use Instagram to your advantage in 2023.
TikTok and Meta face lawsuit from Maryland public schools over “addictive” platforms
A public school in Maryland has filed a lawsuit against the owners of social media giants like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube. The 200-page lawsuit blames them for a growing mental health crisis and an increase in cyberbullying, as well as for intentionally targeting children with addictive platforms.
Which social media platform will grow your photography business quickest?
Which social media platform do you use to build your photography or video business? You are using at least one right? Done correctly, it can be an amazing addition in how you reach your potential clients. Done poorly, and it’s little more than a time suck.

This video heals your FOMO, claiming most Coachella influencer photos are fake
The season of festivals and travels has begun. This means that opening Instagram probably makes you fear of missing out, aka FOMO. Everybody seems to be wandering around and going to festivals like Coachella. But the reality behind those photos is actually quite underwhelming.
According to young musician Loren Gray, those Coachella photos aren’t at all what they seem. In a video she posted on TikTok, she claims that the majority of influencers actually fakes their trip to the famous festival for social media.
This wholesome TikTok trend turns your life into a Wes Anderson movie
Another week, another TikTok trend. TikTok challenges are famous mostly for being stupid. Some even cause extreme harm with a sort of grim Darwinesque natural selection vibe. However, this one is different. You could almost call it wholesome.
I’m talking, of course, about the current trend of Wes Anderson-ising your life into a 30-second clip in the style of the iconic movie director. Complete with a soundtrack from the score to The French Dispatch, and you’ve got yourself a very Insta-worthy little reel. So naturally, I had to try making my own.
Instagram now lets you have more than one link in the bio (finally)
At long last, Instagram is allowing users to put more than one link in their bio. This means that the old method of having to use a third party like Link Tree to list multiple links may be unnecessary.
This is great news for anyone using the platform for marketing their business, particularly if they have more than one revenue stream. It’s also good for photographers who have a particular thing that they want to highlight, for example, the link to a new book or a direct link to a sales gallery page for your images.
Meta is introducing a verified badge, but of course it’s not free
The rumours last month were correct: Meta is introducing a verified status similar to Twitter’s Blue Tick. Imaginatively called ‘Meta Verified, ‘ the new feature rolled out first in Australia and New Zealand in the first phase of testing. Meta has now opened it up to US-based users.
The feature will be available on both Facebook and Instagram, and users will have to submit a valid government ID and pay a subscription to access it.
Utah law now requires minors to ask parents consent for social media
A new law in Utah requires kids under 18 to ask their parents for permission if they want to use social media. Yup, you read that right – what should probably be a part of parents’ responsibilities, the lawmakers took into their own hands. Other than parental consent, kids who do have it will still have a curfew and will be banned from using their favorite social media apps between 10:30 p.m. and 6:30 a.m.
While the law is designed to “protect the young from addictive features” of social media apps, it raises other concerns. Among them are privacy, as well as freedom of speech.
