reFocus Awards has announced the 2023 winners of its annual Color Photography contest. Among 20 categories and six overall winners, you’ll see plenty of magnificent images of different genres and with different stories and sentiments. We bring you this year’s winners, as well as some information about the contest.
This year, photographers from 69 countries worldwide submitted their best work to the contest and the jury selected two photographers of each first, second, and third place. One of each winner belongs to the Professional category, and the other to the Non-professional. The first place in the Professional category was awarded to Belgian photojournalist Alain Schroeder for his image Kushti. It explores Kushti, a traditional form of Indian wrestling, and Schroeder captured the wrestlers relaxing after training. One wrestler examines the eye of another who has something in his eye. “Living and training together promotes camaraderie, solidarity and fraternity in this universe where time has stood still, ” the photographer explains.
In the non-professional category, the first place was awarded to João Coelho for his dystopian environmental portrait titled Scavengers. Taken at the end of the day, it captures a man at the dump which resembles a post-apocalyptic scenario. “The atmosphere is heavy, almost palpable, interspersed with the living flames of the fires spewing toxic fumes that mix with the warm evening air,” the photographer writes. !It is the time of the scavengers, the last hope at the dump.”
