Retailer sites may show it in product images, though, which can be a little misleading. If you want to shop for the latest device, the Surface Pro 9 is now available and is the go-to choice. This top-of-the-line laptop is an excellent iteration in the Surface Pro range from Microsoft. Given its incredibly high price tag and top-end specs, though, you can also consider the Surface Pro 8 as a very similar alternative or the Surface Pro 7 as a more dated but often better value-for-money option.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 9 is a refined version of previous Surface Pro laptops. With a more polished look and curvier edges, it also has a bright and colorful, high-resolution, 13-inch Pixel Sense screen that looks great. A thin and light laptop, even when adding on the type cover and Slim Pen 2, it's ideal for portability if you need to take it between coffee shops and workplaces regularly.
Anyone considering buying it will need to decide between a 12th-generation Intel Core i5 / i7 processor or the version with a Microsoft-Qualcomm-designed SQ3 processor which offers built-in 5G support and more efficient battery life that we awarded four stars out of five in our Microsoft Surface 9 review.
The Microsoft Surface Pro 9 starts at $999 / £1,099 / AU$1,649 for a 12th generation Intel Core i5 model with 8GB of RAM and 128GB SSD. That price can rise to $2,599 / £2,599 / AU$4,149 for an Intel Evo 12th generation Core i7 processor with 32GB of RAM and 1TB SSD. For the 5G model, prices start at $1,299 / £1,299. If you’re willing to pay for it, you could end up with a far more powerful laptop than its sleek exterior suggests, with others able to snap up a lightweight device for less.
Depending on the model you choose, the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 can be reasonable value for such a thin and lightweight 2-in-1 laptop. However, it's almost certain we'll see more Microsoft Surface Pro 9 deals emerge over time if you want to go bigger, specs-wise.
The Surface Pro 8 was the biggest change to the Surface Pro lineup in years when it originally launched. It features design improvements that we've wanted to see for a long time and a significant performance boost. It doesn't stray too far from Microsoft's core range of Windows tablets but does feel like a new generation device to support the launch of Windows 11.
The ageing design of the Microsoft tablet is now long gone, with a modernized look that sports thinner bezels, rounded edges and some of the fastest hardware that's ever been found in a Windows tablet. The ports have also changed, and while we're lamenting the loss of some legacy ports, Microsoft has finally gotten with the times with the inclusion of Thunderbolt 4.
But being the best Surface Pro in years comes at a significant cost: it's the most expensive device out there. The Surface Pro 8 starts at $1,099 / £999 / AU$1,649, which is much more expensive than it's been in the past. Compare that with the Surface Pro 7 which launched for $749 / £799 / AU$1,249 in 2019. That price increase does come with much-needed improvements, but it makes the tablet a harder sell. Add to that the fact that the Surface Pro 8 still doesn't come with the Type Cover in the box and you're looking at a big investment all around.
It's tough, then. Still, as we say in our Surface Pro 8 review, this is the first time Microsoft has had a true competitor to the iPad Pro since Apple's flagship tablet got its major redesign. And that's an exciting reason to consider it for your next laptop purchase even with the newer model now available.
The tradition of a slight specification bump in each new Surface model continued with the Surface Pro 7. Even though we thought it was a somewhat underwhelming upgrade in our Surface Pro 7 review, such boosts in performance didn't go unnoticed.
The quad-core i5 and i7 processors allowed the Surface Pro 7 to more comfortably handle multitasking – even with more demanding programs. That means snappier wake-up times over the now-discontinued and sometimes lagging Pro 6. Plus, if you didn't need such a high-end and high-performance device, the basic i3 dual-core processor with 4GB of RAM model was a great way to save a few pennies and bag a better bargain.
Nowadays, though, there's very limited availability of the Surface Pro 7. That said, we do sometimes see the slightly refined Surface Pro 7+ model on offer at retailers – and it's usually got the Type Cover Keyboard bundled in for free, too. That's the best way to get the most for your money if you don't mind older tech.
The Surface Pro X launched just a month after the cheaper Surface Pro 7 and brings a larger display to the party in an experimental shift towards a new ARM processor developed by both Microsoft and Qualcomm. It's a good-looking laptop for sure, with a gorgeous profile, slimline chassis and excellent display. However, we found it doesn't suit the vast majority of consumer needs in our Surface Pro X review.
Apps struggled to get to grips with the new processor, which means things can run a little slow. And though you pick up an extra USB-C port here, you lose a headphone jack, USB-A port, and micro-SD card slot in the mix. That's a lot of functionality out the window, though you might make good use of the new 10MP 4K camera on the rear.
All in all, we'd pick this up on sale if you're looking for more RAM than the conventional Surface Pro, and a bigger display for multi-tasking or streaming, but you're better off paying a little extra for any deals on one of the more recent models above.

Which is the best Surface Pro to buy?
We'd recommend sticking to the Surface Pro 9 or 8 in your quest for the highest value savings – especially now the Surface Pro 7 is much older and the Surface Pro 6 has been discontinued. Plus, it's worth spending the extra cash to get the latest tech and more powerful components that are often lacking in older models.
Sometimes there's a discount on a previous generation machine with solid specs, such as the Surface Pro 7+ with a Type Cover Keyboard included for free, but these are less frequent these days. Instead, we'd suggest keeping an eye out for similar offers on the Surface Pro 8 or 9 instead as both are excellent devices for the money.

Is the Surface Pro worth the price?
If you're looking for a Windows tablet then the Surface Pro is really your only option outside of 2-in-1 convertible laptops. That means the price of a Surface Pro is typically higher than that of a laptop running the same specs, but you do get the full functionality of a tablet device here.
That means a Surface Pro also has laptop-level specs that are arguably better than devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 or an iPad Pro. However, in recent years these tablets have added more power and functionality to work admirably as more dedicated workstations for around the same cost. The Surface Pro does run the Windows OS, though, so you may find it's worth paying a little more for the luxury of having the flexibility of both a tablet design and a laptop level of performance.
