In the last year or so, I’ve experimented with and tested a huge range of LEDs lights. From the $15,000 Panalux film production monsters to the versatile Godox S-fit compatible heads to the incredible Rotolight panels. But this week I take a look at the other end of the pricing spectrum as I play with the very affordable PixaPro RGB tubes.
Create a beauty-light portrait with nothing but speed lights
Why would you choose to use speedlights when so many other, more powerful options are available? Well, several reasons, actually. They are small, portable, and lightweight, and the latest versions can really pack a punch. They are fairly good value, and you don’t need an external power source or heavy battery pack. Some new models even come with modelling lights. They are simple yet still capable of giving professional results.
In this video for Adorama, photographer Gavin Hoey shows you how he creates a gorgeous beauty light effect using nothing but speedlights.
How to remove bands from your concert photos
Some bands are better than others, and some are so bad I’d quite happily remove them. Of course, I’m talking about banding in your concert images, not the actual bands themselves on stage, although…nope, scratch that thought! I’m strictly talking about photography here, not musical taste.
So what causes this undesirable effect, and if you do encounter it, how do you avoid it or remove it after the fact? In this video, photographer David Bergman tells you how to tackle this frequent problem.
What is the Exposure Triangle?
It’s not as sexy as a love triangle and not as dangerous as the Bermuda Triangle. However, the Exposure Triangle is key to understanding how your camera works. The exposure triangle is also important if you want to nail exposure in manual or semi-automatic modes.
The three things that affect exposure in an image are aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. If you change one of those settings, you must adjust one of the others to compensate. This is where understanding the exposure triangle and stops of light is useful.
Use these two genius methods to remove braces in Photoshop
A rule of thumb for retouching people is to only remove the features that will disappear anyway (unless your client has different requests). While people usually wear braces for a year or more, they will be removed eventually, and your client may want you to remove them in Photoshop.
You may use a Clone Stamp tool as your go-to method, but it has its flaws. In this video, Jesús Ramirez proposes two different methods that are far les destructive and give great results.[Read More…]

It can be difficult being an artist sometimes. There’s a feeling of pressure to be constantly creating something new, pushing those boundaries. DIY Camera-Shy hoodie lets wearer avoid CCTV and surveillance cameras
If you don’t like the idea of being recognized by surveillance cameras, then this latest DIY project could be for you. Of course, if you’re planning to use it for nefarious purposes, then DIYP doesn’t condone that. However, it’s an interesting experiment to see what works and what doesn’t when trying to confuse CCTV cameras.
Artist Mac Pierce invented the Adversarial Infrared Hoodie to “give the user the option to anonymize themselves within the recording of a night vision security camera,” according to his website.
